The city's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to live in the traditional Gracie Mansion, departing from his rent-controlled apartment that was a central issue in his election bid.
Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the primary dwelling for the majority of New York City mayors since the post-war period.
Yet, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a key issue, did not confirm his residency plans promptly following his electoral win in November.
"This decision was based on our family's safety and the imperative to focusing my complete efforts on implementing the affordability agenda the city's residents supported," Mamdani said on Monday.
Mamdani lived in the Astoria neighbourhood, a community renowned for its abundance of immigrant communities and culinary diversity.
"To Astoria: many thanks for showing us the best of New York City," he expressed.
"Even though I'm moving in the neighborhood, it will continue to reside a part of me and my work," he added.
During his campaign, Mamdani tied his core platform – a rent freeze – to his personal living arrangements.
But his opponents, most notably one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for remaining in the rent-stabilized unit despite the fact that he hails from a prominent family.
Not all mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, kept his residence in his personal mansion on Manhattan's Upper East Side during his tenure, which wrapped up in 2012.
In his view, Bloomberg argued it ought to be a venue for official events, and pushed for significant upgrades of the historic mansion.
Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion for his inauguration on 1 January, he will be surrounded by surroundings very different than his previous Astoria digs.
With its butter yellow paint, green shutters, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure with views of the East River.
Within, the ground floor of the classically designed mansion is furnished to reflect the home's original era.
The property, which reportedly has several bedrooms, also has fortified protections to safeguard the mayor and his family.
Some residents have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.
Chirlane McCray, the spouse of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that doors occasionally opened and shutting on their own, and the floorboards made strange noises.
The departing mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "No matter the skeptics say," he declared in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."
The apartment he is leaving is rent-stabilized, meaning the city imposes caps on how much building managers can raise the rent each year.
City residents see such units as essential protections as the price of rent rises faster than the average income.
Records showed Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Per figures from the property website Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
