Officials in Tasmania are attempting to pinpoint a magenta ooze that has materialized on a remote shoreline, with a number of researchers concerned it could be an algae outbreak.
The rosy-colored ooze materialized across a section of a coastal area about 60km south of Hobart. A similar sludge has also been recorded on areas of another local beach and a separate bay.
Samples have been gathered and sent to the Environment Protection Authority for analysis. A official commented that "algae outbreaks are a normal phenomenon in response to changes in food sources, temperature, rain or illumination".
"They are sometimes called reddish tides because the proliferations can color the water reddish," the spokesperson added. "Not all algal blooms are toxic, with numerous types acting as a major source of food for creatures in the oceanic food chain."
"The usual source of reddish water in Tasmanian waters is the oceanic algae Noctiluca scintillans, which can create glowing light shows at night."
Phytoplankton proliferations happen naturally but their frequency has increased in the past few years, partially due to climate change and pollution that combine to create food-loaded oceans primed for the fast proliferation of dinoflagellates.
Dinoflagellates are a marine plant that usually function as the ocean's waste processors. During a proliferation, there is a quick expansion in their colonies that disturbs the healthy balance of aquatic systems.
These events have been likened to underwater bushfires and can persist in growing as long as conditions are ripe. In severe cases, vulnerable aquatic environments can be destroyed as marine life is killed or deprived of oxygen, offering more nutrients for the proliferation.
South Australia in the past dealt with a catastrophic algal bloom along its coastal region after a series of oceanic warm spells, which expanded across a vast area. The outbreak caused surfers with eye irritation and persistent coughs and may have killed up to a quarter-million sea creatures across numerous types, according to agency assessments.
A marine expert, who helped investigate the start of South Australia's algal bloom commented, based on pictures of the local event, the most likely species involved was Noctiluca scintillans, a form of dinoflagellate also known as "marine shimmer".
"There are lots of these outbreaks around Tassie of late," she added.
The scientist said sea sparkle did not produce toxins like the species involved in South Australia's severe outbreak, but it does consume small invertebrates and "many fish eggs", meaning fish and crustacean species were in greatest danger.
"You usually see a outbreak of this algae after a bloom of another organism, or something like a marine breeding," she said.
A campaigner, who gathered specimens of the pink sludge in Tasmania, commented it appeared the suspected bloom had "increased notably" and indicated the aquaculture sector was the probable cause, referring to like situations overseas.
"Therefore Tasmania needs to send a clear message here, the officials and the EPA need to respond to this. We need to study the samples we've collected and we need to notify the people here," she said.
Henley said she had worries for people's well-being after noticing a numbness along her arms and face while being splashed with contaminated seawater.
An advocacy organization has documented lifeless animals and expired organisms appearing on the coast, with a prominent conservationist calling the event as an "natural disaster" and demanding the local leader to visit and "take control the response that officials must be undertaking".
"He needs to realize this is a crisis in the unfolding, commercially as well as for nature."
Talking with journalists, the premier said he was uninformed of any connections between the algal bloom and the aquaculture sector, saying laboratory analysis was necessary before conclusions could be drawn.
"It is vital to guarantee our rivers and seas are environmentally safe and viable," he said.
"The 1,200 beaches across the state are our resources and we need to guarantee the people and our economy can live together to enjoy our waterways effectively and sustainably."
