While perhaps not at the identical stature as pardoning Thanksgiving turkeys, but the Miami-Dade County mayor conducted a Donald Trump moment this week by ritually sparing the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava performed the seasonal stunt at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“The swine has done no wrong. Clemency is justified for her. Her criminal record is spotless,” Levine Cava said in a speech with obvious nods to the extraordinary and sizable number of executive clemencies issued from the start of the onset of a second term in office.
“Except perhaps for eating six or seven apples per day,” the mayor added. “I hope she experiences a long and happy life without fear.”
The event, which both honors and questions the region’s Hispanic tradition of feasting on pork during the holidays, was founded to mirror the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The pig, donated by a Coral Gables firefighter, was named for the current slang trend of young people exclaiming “six seven” – inspired by a hip-hop line – often for no discernable reason. The trend became so widespread that a prominent word reference recently made “six-seven” its annual vocabulary selection.
The pardoned swine is now scheduled to spend its days at a countryside refuge “away from grills and cookware”, according to the organizers' announcement.
“This swine clemency has become one of our favorite ways to begin the holiday season,” said the event host, in a particularly upbeat message.
“It captures the character of Miami: happy, multicultural, and rooted in traditions that bring people together. Every time, we are delighted to mark culture and compassion in a way unique to Miami.”
Guests enjoyed a meat-free selection of spinach croquetas and Cuban coffee as they celebrated Six Seven’s big moment.
