The creative mastermind never anticipated that the Apple TV+ show would emerge as a massive hit. “I am so grateful to the audience,” he states. “I did not foresee the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”
As the debut season of the popular series reaching its finale—and a second season already in development—Gilligan and his team reflected on the fan response and whether it will impact the storyline of Pluribus.
It would be easy to get sidetracked by the constant speculation and online debates regarding Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is striving to steer clear of all that.
“It feels like an endless supply of something incredibly sweet and being laughing uncontrollably,” he describes. “It's the greatest thing, but I get wind of it from others, and that's intentional. Not once have I searched for my own name online, nor do I ever intend to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a bottomless pit I know I would fall into and then I'd be living in squalor from Home Depot and I'd never leave my living room.”
Despite Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s no escaping the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The most practical strategy is to accept it graciously and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.
“We don't try to change the plot,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not changed by online forums.”
“We prefer to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan concludes.
Considering the creative staff aren’t being guided by audience theories, does that mean they have already decided how Pluribus will ultimately end? In short yes… with some caveats.
“We've developed some compelling concepts about where the show might end up,” Gilligan reveals. “yet we stand ready to throw out a good idea for a superior concept. This approach has served us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we conceive of something superior and I suspect we'll be doing that.”
On the other hand, if plans fall through, executive producer Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to use as a backup.
“My recurring proposal is that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and that's where they've been all along,” Smith quips, “but no one is buying it.”
Of course, why mess with the legendary finales?
“I want Carol to awaken next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan says with a smile.
