The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Announce a New Divinity, Labeling it Their Most Ambitious RPG Yet

The buzz surrounding this year's gaming ceremony reached a fever pitch, especially after host Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling image of a strange statue. The mystery has now been solved. Larian Studios is creating a completely new Divinity game.

Revealed to be Divinity, the game was showcased with a bold trailer that included memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the very opening of infernal gates.

A Different Direction

For those anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian warned that a third Original Sin game to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not currently in development.

However, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a evolution of the main series. This distinction implies that the team might be building a more action-oriented experience rather than another turn-based title. Currently, it remains theory, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

What Makes Divinity Special

The Divinity series is widely praised and it's fair to claim it sparked the recent resurgence of complex computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for detailed worlds, branching plots, and flexible progression—qualities that subsequently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is classic fantasy, what makes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency bestowed upon the player.

Where many modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is full of unique possibilities that are viable with a specific type of character with a personal story.

The series is also notoriously open-ended, enabling players to find creative solutions throughout the entire experience. Most missions can be completed in diverse methods, sometimes in surprising fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you remembered something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by teleporting a glob of lava in a clever way.

The Journey Continues

It is these creative systems that have cemented the series to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games in history. Now, the RPG community can get ready for more where that came from in this legendary franchise.
