Steve Bannon, Tucker Carlson and... Liz Truss? Inside the Former PM's Audition for the Maga Movement

Britain's shortest-serving prime minister, launched the inaugural episode of her YouTube show with a pledge to expose "the evil-doers" attempting to undermine Western democracies. She stated she would reveal how an "worldwide alliance of liberal activists work to subvert democracy and the public's choice."

"We're going to look at the Maga phenomenon and see how it can be replicated in Britain," she said. "We will interview the key figures of the Make America Great Again campaign."

Prior to the show's launch, there was a strong advocate. "This is the beginning of a sort of political shift," said veteran reporter John Solomon. The right-leaning Just the News will publish the Truss's new broadcasts.

Forging Alliances in the Maga Media Ecosystem

Compatriot supporters, featuring a advisor linked to Reform UK, have also helped her set up the Truss's program. The production is professional, if basic. The show has attracted 10,000 subscribers in her first week and her premiere garnered 67,000 views in that timeframe.

It is a modest start, but in aligning with John Solomon, Truss is being pushed into a established political media sphere producing and amplifying Make America Great Again themes. Key fixations involve alleged censorship by the traditional news outlets and a aim to remove a shadowy government apparatus – which she attributes her downfall to for the swift end of her calamitous premiership.

A Controversial Partner

Her effort to bring American conservative media to Britain has aligned her more closely to divisive personalities such as Solomon.

He founded his media outlet following scrutiny when allegations surfaced of pushing inaccurate reports about Joe Biden's anticorruption effort in Ukraine, as well as contentious articles about one-time diplomat to that country.

His claims were echoed throughout the pro-Trump outlets, with Solomon appearing as a common interviewee on the widely-watched Fox News program. The former president personally boosted Solomon's reporting.

It determined the journalist had cited untrustworthy contacts and said he "failed to identify crucial information about key Ukrainian sources, such as the reality that they had been indicted or were being probed."

Entering the Ecosystem

Solomon's own TV and radio guest spots are a sign of the conservative ecosystem the former prime minister is entering. He discussed his support for the program on a show he co-hosts on the right-wing channel, a political media platform that is the base for the conservative firebrand Steve Bannon and on which former Fox host Tucker Carlson also is seen. Truss has already interviewed the political operative on one of her first podcasts.

Through her association with the journalist and his outlet, the former leader has become a minor player in a much wider network of pro-Trump platforms that routinely amplify each other's content.

The journalist's podcast and Real America's Voice show have repeatedly hosted personalities such as influencer Mike Benz, a rightwing influencer whose criticism of the US Agency for International Development was cited by Elon Musk as grounds for shutting down the international development organization.

An International Strategy

While her awkward delivery and career difficulties have drawn derision at home, certain American analysts do not dismiss her efforts to revamp her image as a local version of the Make America Great Again press.

"You have to take individuals such as her with seriousness, despite the fact that you may not want to take them literally," commented Rob Flaherty, who worked in the Biden administration.

"You saw how in 2024 President Trump utilized that media network to get his message out. Without a doubt that network exports and influences discourse abroad. It seems fairly obvious to me that the circumstances in the Britain are akin to what enabled this alternative media ecosystem to thrive here."

a political theory expert, said the digital right-wing media sphere was already exerting influence in the United Kingdom.

"Digital media knows no borders," he said. "There's a kind environment within which ideas travel – on occasion taking an extreme form and occasionally in softer tones – but which is connected."

The academic said the rise of the online right in the United Kingdom lately meant the "possibility to have a larger effect is substantial."
