Republicans in California filed a federal lawsuit this Wednesday, contesting a significant redistricting initiative that has the potential to shift as many as five House seats to the benefit of Democrats.
This initiative, Proposition 50, was approved by voters Tuesday night, marking a clear win for Democrats. This arrangement grants on a temporary basis the authority to delineate congressional districts to the state's legislative body, allowing it to adopt district maps that are expected to assist the Democratic party gain five seats in the House of Representatives.
The plan is a direct response to gerrymandering in Texas, where GOP lawmakers, following the US president's direction, have carved out a number of new safe Republican districts.
