New York state attorney general has launched a recent reporting form encouraging residents to submit photos and videos of immigration raids throughout New York. This action comes just a day after a major enforcement action shook NYC's Chinatown, triggering large-scale demonstrations.
A lawmaker disclosed during a Wednesday press conference that four American citizens were detained and detained for "nearly 24 hours" following Tuesday's raid. Protests broke out in the city on both Tuesday and Wednesday.
"Each citizen has the right to reside free from terror," the AG stated in a statement.
"Anyone who observed and captured immigration enforcement yesterday, I urge you to share that evidence with my office. We are pledged to examining these accounts and evaluating any legal breaches."
The form offers options to submit images and video footage of the incident, as well as a section to specify location information. When submitting, users must tick a option that acknowledges that "the office may use any evidence provided in a official report, such as in a legal proceeding or public report."
The Chinatown raid, which witnesses say involved more than 50 federal agents, happened in a famous district of the city where fake products and other goods are regularly available en masse – often to visitors.
Videos of Tuesday's raid reveal several masked and armed personnel securing and holding a man, and shoving away onlookers. Masses of locals pursued the officers down the sidewalks. An armored military vehicle was observed moving along the Manhattan avenues.
In a news conference organized with the immigrant advocacy group, Representative Goldman, a Democrat, stated that four American citizens were taken by federal agents for almost a full day and that there were "no conditions where US citizens should be detained for without cause." He noted the citizens were freed on the following day with no legal action taken.
"The intent is obvious here. It is not focused on deporting lawbreakers," he remarked. "This is a militarized effort to provoke unrest. It is purely a pretext to generate turmoil for this administration to bring in the armed forces to halt violence that they have created."
Outrage over the ICE raid escalated – each of the NYC mayor hopefuls denounced the incident, as did Governor Kathy Hochul.
"Once again, the Trump administration chooses oppressive displays that create fear, rather than security. It has to end," a contender declared.
The city's advocacy organizations voiced concern too.
"Immigration agents targeted Chinatown in NYC with armored transports, hooded officers and tactical gear to target street vendors working to survive. This operation had no connection to community security and focused completely on frightening communities and areas," said the leader of a rights organization.
Official guidelines bans the holding of citizens and the bureau has claimed it refrains from take into custody citizens. Nevertheless, investigative journalism has discovered that more than 170 citizens have been held against their will by federal agents during the period of the current administration.
Immigration operations have been cropping up increasingly in the state and around the country recently.
A mid-October raid in midtown Manhattan was the earliest reported action on an refuge facility of the present government. Protests against federal operations are ubiquitous as are accusations of force and abusive practices.
Recently, a document provided by civil rights groups claimed healthcare failures of women with child in ICE facilities.
