Missing Johann Sebastian Bach Compositions Played for First-Ever Performance in 320 Years

Historical organ composition
Bach is believed to have created the pair of organ works at the start of his musical journey

Recently identified musical pieces by the renowned composer Bach have been presented and played in Germany for the initial occasion in three hundred twenty years.

The country's Cultural Affairs Minister Wolfram Weimer labeled the finding of the two pieces a "great moment for the global music scene".

They originally drew interest of a musical scholar in 1992 when he was documenting historical musical documents at the Brussels archive.

The organ pieces - the D minor Chaconne and G minor composition - were without dates and anonymous. The researcher spent the subsequent thirty years working to confirm the identity of the pieces.

Memorable Concert

They were performed at the St Thomas Church in the German city, where Bach is laid to rest and where he worked as a cantor for twenty-seven years.

The two pieces were performed by Dutch organist the renowned organist, who said he was honored to be able to present them for the initial performance in 320 years.

He said the pieces were "remarkably sophisticated" and would be "an important addition for contemporary organ players, as they are also appropriate for reduced-scale organs".

Cultural Relevance

They are considered to have been created at the beginning of Bach's professional life, when he was employed as an music instructor in the town of the Thuringian town in the German region.

The researcher, who is now the head of the Bach research center in Leipzig, said they demonstrated several qualities unique to the musical genius.

"In terms of style, the pieces also feature aspects that can be observed in the composer's creations from that era, but not in those of any other composer," he said.

They are thought to have been transcribed in 1705 by a student of Bach, the historical figure.

At a revealing of the pieces, the expert said he was "virtually certain that Bach had created the two pieces" and they have now been included into the recognized inventory of his compositions.
