Around fifty automobiles have been smeared with what seems to be human blood in the Germany's city of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Vehicles, exterior walls and postboxes were defaced, occasionally with Nazi symbols, they announced in a statement.
Law enforcement state they were notified late on Wednesday evening, when a resident noticed that a automobile in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued liquid.
The substance had been applied in the shape of a banned symbol, they stated.
Officers then discovered numerous other marked automobiles and residential walls in the nearby vicinity.
Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under legislation outlawing the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.
Police report initial examinations show the liquid was most likely blood from a person.
"There is still no indication as to its origin; authorities are currently not informed of any harm in relation with the incident," they commented.
Municipal representatives stated they were working "to resolve the case" and have asked to the residents for details.
A senior representative said the vandalism made him stunned and had to be addressed rapidly.
"This act strikes at the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the extremist attack in 2020," he wrote on social media, recalling the murder of nine victims by a assailant focusing on people of immigrant origin in 2020.
