An speeding vehicle that was fleeing law enforcement crashed into a busy bar in the early hours on Saturday, claiming the lives of four individuals and injuring eleven in a vintage district of Florida, renowned for its nightlife and tourists.
Aerial surveillance unit with the local law enforcement agency observed the vehicle driving dangerously on a highway at about 12.40am after police stated the silver sedan had been observed illegally racing in another neighborhood, as per a law enforcement statement.
The Florida road police caught up with the vehicle and attempted to perform a maneuver that involves striking a back panel of a escaping vehicle to cause it to lose control, known as a pit, but it was ineffective.
State police officers “ended pursuit” as the car raced toward the vintage Ybor City district near downtown, Tampa authorities reported. Ultimately, the motorist failed to maintain control of the car and struck more than a dozen individuals near the bar, officials confirmed.
Three individuals died at the scene and a fourth victim died at a medical facility. As of Saturday morning, a fifth casualty was admitted in serious condition, and 8 other victims were being cared for at local medical centers but were classified as not critical, authorities stated. Two other victims experienced minor harm and refused medical aid at the scene. Every one of the 15 people are grown individuals.
“The incident today was a pointless tragedy, our hearts are with the families of the victims and everyone who were impacted,” the local top law enforcement officer expressed in a message.
Officers identified the suspect as 22-year-old the individual, who was booked on Saturday and is being held at the local detention facility.
Legal documents showed the suspect has been accused with 4 counts of vehicular homicide and four charges of aggravated fleeing or eluding with serious bodily injury or death. All are serious crimes. Legal representation was listed for the accused.
“Our entire city is mourning the tragedy,” remarked Tampa’s mayor, who also served as Tampa’s first female top cop, in a message on social media.
“My thoughts are with the victims and families. Official inquiries into this crash is ongoing, and efforts are underway to get explanations,” she wrote.
In recent years, certain regions and municipal authorities have advocated to limit the employment of high-speed car chases to protect both the public and officers. After a increase in fatalities, a recent study funded by the US justice department recommended police chases to be rarely used, explaining that the risk to individuals, officers and bystanders often exceeds the urgent need to apprehend a suspect.
Still, the state has intensified efforts on the methods, with the region’s road police revising its policies to loosen restrictions on the use of car chases and precision techniques. The justice department-backed analysis characterized those strategies as “high-risk” and “debated”.
