Antony Price, the visionary UK-based designer behind some of the most iconic looks favored by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has sadly died aged 80.

Price was best known for his defined forms and theatrical styles, including the light-hued ensembles that appeared in rock band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "Rio".

"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement across their platforms."

Price's death comes shortly after he debuted his most recent collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Singer Lily Allen walked in a dress that paid homage to the famous black velvet "revenge dress" made famous by the late Princess Diana.

An Enduring Influence

Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price relocated to London in the early 1960s to enroll at the prestigious Royal College of Art.

Upon completing his studies, he began designing menswear at the company Stirling Copper and was responsible for the tight, button-detailed trousers that Sir Mick Jagger sported during the band's Gimme Shelter tour in the late sixties.

He established his eponymous line in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show opened with looks from model Jerry Hall, who later wore the bridal gown Price created for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.

Partnerships with Stars

A long-time collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price designed the distinctive jacket the artist wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His signature ability to fuse menswear and womenswear along with his masterful technique in shaping sculptural silhouettes cemented his status as a "true original," as stated by the British Fashion Council.

In the 1990s, he began working on outfits for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, including a number of outfits for her American tour after becoming Duchess.

Following a profession lasting over fifty years, Price presented his final runway show in London recently in conjunction with the label 16Arlington.

  • Defined Shapes: The core of his aesthetic.
  • Theatrical Flair: Influencing music videos and stagewear.
  • Gender-Fluid Fashion: Creating a unique, androgynous style.
  • Working with Stars and Royalty: Spanning iconic musicians and members of the royal family.

The fashion world says farewell to a genuine innovator whose influence on the visual landscape of music remains profoundly felt.
