An individual earned a substantial sum by predicting the removal of Nicolás Maduro just before it was made public, sparking debate about the possibility of profiting from confidential information of the event.

Changing Odds in Forecasts

Bets placed on the crypto-platform, a blockchain-based service, that the Venezuelan president would be out of power by the close of the month surged in the time leading up to former President Trump stated on the weekend that the Venezuelan leader had been taken into custody.

A particular user, which registered on the site in December and took four positions, all on political events in Venezuela, profited a total of $436K from a modest bet of $32.5K.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. The user had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.

Market Signals Before Announcement

Trading information shows that traders estimated the likelihood of the president's removal at just 6.5% in the midday period of Friday, January 2nd.

Yet the market's assessment had jumped to over 10% by the end of the day and surged in the first hours of January 3rd, pointing to a sharp shift in positions right before the official statement was made.

"This specific wager has all the characteristics of a trade based on confidential knowledge," stated Dennis Kelleher.

Several of other individuals also earned tens of thousands of dollars from similar wagers.

Regulatory Scrutiny Grows

Some lawmakers are growing concerned.

A new rule presented on the start of the week seeks to ban public officials from placing bets on forecasting platforms if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a wager.

Industry Context

Event-driven betting sites have grown significantly in recent years, with users able to wager on everything from sports outcomes to politics.

Prediction markets faced scrutiny under the Biden administration. But it has found a more favorable environment during the present political climate.

Using confidential knowledge is against the law in the traditional financial markets, but there are more ambiguous rules in the prediction market industry.

A spokesperson for another major platform said their site "explicitly prohibits trading on insider information of any form."
