Adult Swim's Top Fresh Series of This Year Gets a Major Renewal for an Additional Two Seasons.

In October of last year, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, shortly thereafter, the channel introduced a completely new animated series with a markedly softer feel. Haha, You Clowns was sweet and soothing, reminiscent of a cartoon version of a serene talk show. At a time often marked by cynicism, this show's wholesomeness found an audience and turned it into a breakout hit.

A Significant Investment

On December 18th, Adult Swim confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two more seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The show focuses on three polite teenage brothers whose primary trait is their profound affection for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four key characters.

"I am incredibly thankful to the audience of the show who took a chance on the show and spread the word," stated Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."

A President's Endorsement

In the same announcement laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and oddly captivating." He thanked the fans who found the show and supported its peculiarly charming sensibility.

"All of you got behind this new show, championed for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Comforting Counterpoint

Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. Viewers found something deeply soothing about observing this endearing family go about their daily lives.

At the time, creator Joe Cappa shared his desire to evolve comedy past its prevailing cynical streak. He linked this trend to various cultural shifts.

“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we are trapped in,” explained Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we just have to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”

Future Seasons

With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa may well catalyze that very evolution. If nothing else, the renewal promises audiences a little more time to experience the warm glow of the unique Campbell clan.

The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. All episodes is ready to watch on HBO Max.
